BRUSSELS– 11 April 2024 – In a collaborative effort led by the Global Data Alliance (GDA), leading organizations representing both cloud customers and providers across diverse sectors of the economy issued a joint statement supporting the latest version (22 March) of the EU Cyber Certification Scheme (EUCS). The joint letter’s signatories call for the swift adoption of the draft ahead of the European Cyber Certification Group (ECCG) meeting on 15 April.
Signatories welcomed the removal of the “sovereignty” requirements as a significant development, highlighting industries’ shared focus on the need for high levels of cybersecurity based on actual technical and functional criteria, and ensuring that certification is driven by considerations of technical proficiency rather than political factors.
“We are committed to ensuring that both customers and providers of cloud services are able to assess and choose the best, most secure certified solutions from a technical cybersecurity standpoint,” said Thomas Boué, Director-General, Policy-EMEA at BSA, the organization administering GDA. “By bringing together several impacted industries to support the new EUCS draft, we are reinforcing our message to the policymakers; we need them to build and maintain strong and open cybersecurity standards across Europe.”
The seven organizations call upon the members of the ECCG to swiftly adopt the latest version of the EUCS and the EU Commission to proceed with drafting the implementing Act without the inclusion of the sovereignty requirements. Furthermore, the co-signatories advocate for a transparent and inclusive consultation process to solicit stakeholder feedback, including a public consultation for a minimum period of 4 weeks, mirroring the approach used for the EU Common Criteria-based cybersecurity certification scheme (EUCC).
